MoveUPward & Onward!

Welcome to the Upward Scholars family!

Upward Scholars is a Latinx-led nonprofit that provides adult immigrants the boost they need to move up the economic ladder through education and career development support.

Whether it’s immigration status, lack of a college degree, or being stuck working multiple low-wage jobs just to make ends meet, many Upward Scholars students face insurmountable obstacles to earning a family-sustaining wage. Over the last decade, Upward Scholars has helped transform the lives of over 1,000 adult immigrant students in the Bay Area, primarily through financial and academic support.

The pandemic's impact on our students' lives, especially our undocumented students, heightened our focus on issues of economic mobility. Upward Scholars reinforced our career development support and education through the MoveUp Initiative. Our growing portfolio of MoveUp programs helps prepare our students for the challenges and barriers they face as they strive to reach their full potential. Currently, MoveUp programs include ¡Habla Más!, NannyUp, BusinessUp, JobUp, and ScholarUp.

The career education and development opportunities students receive through MoveUp helps them create better lives for themselves and brighter futures for their families and our community. Marta Lily is one of many students benefiting from the Upward Scholars MoveUp Initiative. We are excited to share her journey to showcase what is possible when immigrants have access to career and employment opportunities.

Together, we can help transform the lives of many more students like Marta Lily so they, too, can MoveUPward & Onward!

Virtual Conversation Club

Upward Scholars Conversation Club is an ideal way to contribute if you don't have a lot of time but are eager to engage with Upward Scholars students. Students build self-confidence in their English conversation skills via this safe, friendly, and welcoming virtual environment.

Together we focus on topics that stimulate and inspire students’ educational journeys while supporting them in their English listening and speaking skills development.

Our next virtual Conversation Club takes place:

Friday, September 24, 2021

6:30 to 7:45 pm

Please RSVP here now or by noon on September 16.

California State Senator Josh Becker's Latinx Advisory Committee

I am honored to be selected as an inaugural member of Senator Becker's Latinx Advisory Committee and thrilled to join other Latinx activists and leaders quarterly to serve as a sounding board on important issues that impact Latinx communities in our district.

Warmly,
